Here we suggest ideas for visits, places where you will find some of the most beautiful landscapes in Aveyron, villages where you will discover a preserved heritage and towns with a past rich in history.
The Raspes du Tarn
The Raspes region begins downstream from Millau to the border of the Tarn department, following the river that winds it deep into the valley. In order to exploit this pronounced relief, three hydroelectric dams were built along the Raspes:
- the Pinet dam,
- the Truel dam
- and the Jourdanie dam.
In addition, many medieval castles dominate the valley and you will enjoy exceptional views.
The Baumes waterfall at 500 m from the campsite
The Baumes waterfall is the emblem of the village. This waterfall of 18 metres marks the end of the Lévéjac runoff which flows into the Tarn river.
On the left as you leave the campsite, take the D73, cross the Tarn bridge and barely 500 metres further on you will find yourself in front of the Baumes waterfall. From this photo spot, immortalise the spectacle of these emerald waters tumbling down a beautiful waterfall.
Sportsmen and nature lovers will hire a canoe, pedalo or paddle at the campsite for a sporty activity under this splendid refreshing waterfall.
Roquefort only 15 km away
The Cité fromagère Roquefort stands on the scree of the Rocher du Combalou and in the heart of the Parc naturel régional des Grandes Causses. In this commune with its quiet surroundings lies a savoir-faire and a tradition that is over a thousand years old. The caves of Roquefort were built on superimposed floors in the scree of the Rocher du Combalou. Ventilation through the fleurines (faults) allows a temperature of 8°C to 10°C to be maintained in these natural caves.
Today, more than a thousand people work on the maturing of this cheese. Accessible to the public all year round, bring warm clothes and come and discover the mysterious world of the king of cheeses.
Les Costes-Gozon at 11 km
Occupied by man since the Palaeolithic, the Costes-Gozon is home to the restored chapel and the chateau ruins, both offering exceptional views.
Nearby Pinsac, the site of Mas Vieil gathers sarcophagi and remains of a prehistoric habitat. Also, you will enjoy moments in the middle of nature thanks to the orientation course and the marked hiking trail that allows you to see all the sites. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Dragonnière, an exhibition room on local heritage and ironwork where a permanent exhibition is held.
Castelnau-Pégayrols at 16 km
Perched on its rock, Castelnau-Pégayrols dominates the magnificent landscape of the Muse valley. This strategic position, overlooking a cliff, has allowed the preservation of the village’s monuments.
At present, five of them are listed in the register of Historic Monuments.
Ayssènes at 19 km
Built on a ridge overlooking the Tarn, the village of Ayssènes is the link between the Lévézou plateau and the Raspes du Tarn.
In the heart of the village, you can discover the history of the chestnut groves as well as the religious treasures of our countryside. At the end of the village is the unmissable Roc Saint Jean, listed as a remarkable site in France and Europe.
You will also enjoy an exceptional view from the belvedere, specially designed for the pleasure of the eyes.
Brousse-le-château at 33 km
Since 1997, Brousse-le-Château has been classified as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”. Nestled in the heart of the valley, its castle, listed since 1943, is a admirable example of architecture.
As you stroll through this village with its bucolic atmosphere, you will also discover the church, the oratory, the character houses and the Romanesque bridge to enjoy a trip through time.
Sylvanès at 43 km
A place of culture, art and spirituality, the old Sylvanès Abbey is universally renowned. In July and August, it comes alive to the rhythm of the international festival of Sacred Music – World Music which is one of the major national events.
Above the village and 3 km away is a wooden church of Russian Orthodox style worthy of the churches of Kiji.
Peyre at 16 km
The village of Peyre, voted one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is carved into the cliffs and overlooks the Tarn and its clear waters.
This troglodytic village establishes a surprising link between the beauty of the old stones and the architectural prowess represented by the famous Millau Viaduct, just opposite. This small village, among the most picturesque in Aveyron, also offers one of the most beautiful views of the Viaduct.
The Larzac plateau at 24 km
Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Larzac plateau is located in the Grands Causses Regional Nature Park in the south of Aveyron. With over 1000 km², it forms a limestone plateau with lunar landscapes. It is a place steeped in history where the Templar Hospitallers have left their mark with a unique architectural heritage. It becomes a playground appreciated by lovers of outdoor activities.
The Templar villages
- La Cavalerie at 25 km : Rich in history, this site founded by the Templars and fortified by the Hospitallers became a place of covetousness during the wars of religion. You can admire this panorama from the chemin de la ronde, which was restored over 15 years.
- La Couvertoirade at 51 km: Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, this medieval village is isolated in the middle of the Causse. Discover its well-preserved nature, stroll through its narrow streets and meet its artisans. Venture outside its ramparts and you can admire the unspoiled cloister and the windmill.
- Saint-Jean-d’Alcas at 24 km: Preserved as such for years, this small village contains parallel streets, 4 towers and multiple identical houses.
- Sainte-Eulalie-de-Cernon at 24 km: Considered the capital of the Templar hospital sites of Larzac, this village has one of the best preserved commanderies in France.
- Le Viala du Pas de Jaux 25km away: its tower protected and allowed the inhabitants to be watched.
Les monts & lacs du Lévézou 35 km from the campsite
In this preserved natural area fields rub shoulders with five artificial lakes :
- Bages,
- Pont-de-Salars,
- Gourde,
- Pareloup,
- Villefranche-de-Panat.
These lakes offer you moments of swimming, fishing and water activities to do with family or friends on a sunny day. Nearby, the deciduous and coniferous forests will allow you to go on multiple hikes or mountain bike rides.
The Aubrac and its wide open spaces 100 km from the campsite
2,500 km² of forest and grazing land to enjoy its many hiking trails, its “burons” to recharge your batteries, its exceptional flora, its knives and Laguiole cheese, not to mention the famous Aubrac cows with their kohl-makeup eyes.
